2021- Rated R- 2hr 12min
Director- James Gunn
Writer– James Gunn
Cast- Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, & More!
I know what you may be thinking, “The last movie wasn’t that great…” but before you pass judgment, I highly recommend watching The Suicide Squad on HBOMax or In Theaters! As an advent “Marvel” fangirl (and I mean this is the most basic sense), you would think I am opposed to a DCEU (DC Extended Universe) movie, and that couldn’t be farther from the truth. I like GOOD movies, and James Gunn did an excellent job directing this sequel. I’m not one for ratings, but even Rotten Tomatoes gave it 92%! Still not convinced? Relax and read my spoiler-free review of The Suicide Squad
Plot
Intelligence Office Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) is back with another Task Force X mission. Waller handpicks the supervillains at Belle Reve penitentiary to join the squad. Her goal; to complete the mission at all costs. Her method; to let the scum of the Earth pay for their sins. Similar to the original Suicide Squad movie, Waller uses the promise of a reduced sentence as leverage to recruit the inmates. If they are not inclined to join Task Force X, she uses more personal leverages. Bloodsport (Idris Elba) is recruited to lead her team on the mission along with Peacemaker, Nanaue (King Shark), Ratcatcher 2, and Polka-Dot Man. With all of their skills working together, what could possibly go wrong?
Characters
My first worry was the characters in the movie. I was unfamiliar with many of the characters with the exception of Harley Quinn and the returning cast from the original Suicide Squad film. At first glance, the only other character of interest was the massive shark whom I was introduced to in the Harley Quinn animated series. The movie did a great job in showcasing the new characters and providing them with unique personalities. King Shark and Bloodsport are my favorites! I love the intensity that Bloodsport provides and King Shark has funny moments throughout the film. Something that made me think, even though the characters are “Super Villains” and there’s no real reason to give their characters depth, I enjoyed the small character arcs that were presented in the film. Even the transition that Harley made from the last film is a nice break from the action.
Visuals & Sounds
Speaking of action, holey moley! Going into the movie my fiancé asked what the rating was. I grinned and told him it was Rated R and for good reason. While it’s not super gory there are plenty of scenes where my action junkies can get their fix! The scenes are fast paced and you don’t feel lost in the action. I watched Fast 9 in theaters last month and let me tell you, it was severely over the top with the action and I had to keep reminding myself that it was an action movie so the plot didn’t matter. The opposite was presented in this film and you have both the cool action scenes and storyline to get lost in. Another cool feature of the film is the font and wording being used to help transition the current scene. There’s clever usage of wordplay throughout the film and while some may find it annoying, I quite enjoyed them. The setting was a big surprise for me as I always associate DC with Dark everything! Not this time! The plot and overall theme of the movie is still “Dark” in comparison to Marvel films, but the location and settings were great. There’s an equal mix of nighttime and daytime action.
Selling Points
The tandem fight scenes that we love in super hero movies! There’s a scene where are villains are wreaking havoc and the swap between each of them is worth the price of the ticket or HBOMax. Realistic as can be from the squad’s motivations to their actions in certain environments.
Final Thoughts
I thoroughly enjoyed the sequel compared to the original Suicide Squad movie. While the villains were somewhat unknown to me at the beginning, by the end of the film I found myself wanting to know more about some of them (gotta love that internet lol). The casting was great. Viola Davis as Waller provided iconic moments in the movie, Bloodsport kept it interesting and even John Cena’s character Peacemaker make’s a hilarious impact. Side note: the DCEU is getting it’s first film series on HBOMax and it will follow the origins of Peacemaker. John Cena will reprise his role in January 2022.
